WIND

  • The Department of Defense is stalling approvals for about 165 onshore wind projects on private lands, according to the American Clean Power Association, including those awaiting final sign-off, others in the middle of negotiations, and some that would not typically require oversight by the agency.   • Dominion Energy’s Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, the U.S.’s largest under-construction offshore wind farm, has nine turbines in the water and is installing two turbines a day, putting it on track to begin operating next year. (E&E News)

IRAN WAR

  • War in Iran has prompted nations around the world to reevaluate their energy systems, with some countries falling back on coal and others boosting investment in clean sources like solar and nuclear. (Grist)

GRID

  • The North American Electric Reliability Corp. is slated to issue a high-level alert today about threats large data centers pose to the power system, as the grid monitor develops new standards for the facilities. (E&E News)

  • California’s grid operator and PacifiCorp launch their regional Extended Day-Ahead Market, giving them and other member utilities greater access to energy resources across the West to meet forecast demand. (Inside Climate News, Oregonian, Public Power)

  • New York’s grid operator says two fossil-fueled plants targeted for retirement should stay online until 2029 to address reliability concerns, but environmental justice advocates say the group should reconsider once a Canadian hydropower line comes online later this month. (E&E News)

  • Geothermal company Fervo Energy seeks $1.33 billion in its U.S. initial public offering. (Bloomberg)

MINING

  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration rules that The Metals Co.’s application for deep-seabed mining is fully compliant with U.S. regulations, which the firm says is a key milestone” toward commercialization. (news release)

  • Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) sends a letter to 24 gas, electric, and water utilities, telling them that they need to focus more on their customers than on boosting earnings: We can no longer simply prioritize corporate profitability.” (WHYY)
